Nevada Casinos
by Adel Awwad

Nevada, in particular, Las Vegas, is the first place most people think of when you mention the word "casino." This state is known for gambling more than just about anything else. However, there is more to Nevada than gambling and the fine Nevada casinos.

The Hoover Dam, Pyramid Lake, Lake Tahoe and the vast desert spaces all add to Nevada's pull as a tourist destination. Its capital, Carson City, is a town full of historical significance and of course, the lure of Las Vegas as a top travel destination, all add to the appeal of Nevada.

Casinos are plentiful in Nevada, with the major concentration of them being in Las Vegas. Almost all of Nevada's casinos feature a large number of slot machines, table games, dining and entertainment options, with some more upscale than others. Nevada casinos are unmatched in terms of quality and most casinos around the world model their facilities after those found in Nevada.

Starting in Las Vegas, the higher end casinos include: The Aladdin Resort & Casino, The Bellagio, Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, The MGM Grand, Caesars Palace, The Excalibur Hotel & Casino, The Mirage, Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, to name a few. These Nevada casinos all feature thousands of slots machines, hundred of table games and all of them feature special shows and entertainment options. From Broadway shows to musical performances by top artists to boxing matches, these Nevada casinos are the best of the best and are unrivaled. The Nevada casinos are visually stunning and from fountains to light shows, no expense in spared in the aesthetic affect of each one of the Nevada casinos. Up and down the Las Vegas "strip", there are a number of smaller facilities, each devoted to helping you win and lose money. Each casino has facilities in place to pamper you, make you comfortable, and encourage you to stay longer, gamble more and spend more money.

Venturing outside of the bright lights of Las Vegas, there is a large of concentration of casinos in both Carson City and Reno.

Reno features the Atlantis Casino & Resort, Harrah's and the Sands Regency Casino Hotel. Carson City boasts the Silver Dollar Casino and the Carson Nugget. Each of these Nevada casinos are not as large scale as those located in Las Vegas, but feature a nice mix of table games, slot machines and various amenities.

Nevada casinos are the best of the best and a casino can be found in almost any city in the state. The amenities are numerous, the stakes often high and the experience unforgettable. Finally, now and in the future, Nevada casinos will remain a popular tourist attraction.

Superstitious gamblers

Gambling Superstitions: No dogs near the gambling table and keep your horny toad close
Superstitions are so common that even the most diehard realists sometimes fall prey to believing them. It is well known that famous athletes have their beliefs: Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA Championships wearing his "lucky" college gym shorts underneath his uniform. Golfer Tiger Woods supposedly believes that the color red is lucky for him (Superstitions run rampant, 2004).Gambling, in particular, has long been associated with all kinds of superstitions, for example: (1) A throw of two ones in dice is called Snake Eyes, a reference to the devil who presented himself to Eve in that form; (2) always blow on your cards or dice for luck; (3) never keep dogs near a gambling table; and (4) keep a horny toad toenail for luck (Dossey, 1992).But how does being superstitious affect individuals' tendencies toward problem gambling? A new study from Joukhador, Blaszczynzki, & Maccallum (2004) provides evidence of a link between superstitious beliefs and gambling problems. Joukhador et al. recruited 56 (20 female) problem Electronic Gaming Machine (EGM) gamblers from both a university-affiliated treatment clinic and a community gambling counseling agency. A control group of 74 nonproblem gamblers were recruited from colleagues and acquaintances of the study researchers. The researchers required participants of the problem gambling subject pool to have a South Oaks Gambling (SOGS) score of at least 10 (mean SOGS score = 12.9). In addition to the SOGS, all subjects completed a brief interview to obtain demographic information and gather other dependent measures: number of gambling sessions per week, amount brought to each gambling session, level of debt, years of problems with gambling, money lost each week, time spent at each gambling session, and an eight-item superstition test, which is shown in Table 1.Subjects rated, on a five-point scale ranging from zero (not at all) to four (very much), the strength of their beliefs in the eight listed items.Table 1. Eight-item superstition test (Joukhador et al., 2004)Significant differences were found between problem and non-problem gamblers on several demographic variables as well as in the endorsement of superstitious beliefs. Problem gamblers reported significantly greater (1) number of gambling sessions per week, (2) amount of money taken to gambling sessions, (3) current debt, (4) years of problem gambling, (5) weekly losses, and (6) time spent at gambling sessions.Mann-Whitney U-tests revealed that problem EGM gamblers endorsed significantly more superstitious beliefs (M = 9.6, SD = 6.7) as compared to non-problem gamblers (M = 2.2, SD = 3.4;), respectively (Z= -5.8, p <>

How to play the "Pokies "

Australian slots are also known as …Pokies…poker machines…and of course …slots.
The aim of the game on the pokies is to come up with a winning combination. There are various types of slots in an Australian casino (or Club) and the traditional spinning reels type of game is the most popular, Keno Machines are also present in the casinos.
The main poker machine is the “Multiline “game where you get the opportunity to win on a number of lines simultaneously and the winning lines are illuminated for you.
Multiplier slots give you the opportunity to vary the amount you bet on each of your chosen lines (or ways).
Most of the pokies are a combination of the “Multiline and the Multiplier “ which means you can play as many lines as you wish for as much or as little as you please.
The operation of the pokies is simple, you insert your coins ($1 coins) these days, select the options you wish to play then press the Start/Spin button.
The slots come in varying denominations, form 1 cent usually up to $2 so in theory if you were playing a 1-cent machine by one line it would cost you 1 cent per spin.
When you have finished playing, you can cash out (if you have any cash left!) and the machine will pay you out either in cash or vouchers.
Most Australian Casinos and Clubs have some of the slots designated “Progressive Jackpots “ where the jackpot increases with each play usually on a linked basis where there could be any number of other slots all contributing to the jackpot.

Slot machine myths

We've all heard the hype about the casinos, use warm coins, this machine just paid off don't play it, that machine hasn't hit for awhile better play it. All these have one thing in common, they're FALSE. The random number generators inside the slot machines determine the outcome of the game the instant you press the spin button or pull the handle to play the game.

Here's a few more myths that are completely 100% false.

Myth #1 - A slot machine that has received extended play with no significant payouts is "due" to hit. There is NO truth to this myth as outcomes are decided by a combination of randomness and probability factor.

Myth #2 - If the machine feels cold to the touch, cold coins/tokens should be used. Likewise, if the machine is warm to the touch, warmed up coins/tokens should be used. The temperature of the machine and/or coins has absolutely NO bearing on anything at all. In fact if you find some warm coins it's generally because the cooling fan on the sides of the machines aren't working properly.

Myth #3 - If a slot machine has just hit for the top jackpot, it isn't going to hit it again for a very, very long time. Randomness and probability factor decide when the machine "hits" again. Nothing more - nothing less.

Myth #4 - The casinos loosen and tighten the machines at will. While the casinos DO keep an eye on who wins/loses, they do NOT "tweak" the machines. Slot payouts are very tightly regulated. In most gaming jurisdictions when a casino wants to change the return of a machine there must be a gaming agent present and that gaming agent will use his laptop computer to verify that the chip coming out is what was supposed to be in there and the one going in is the one that is supposed to be going in. So as you can see it's much easier to get a dolly and move a good paying machine to another location.

Myth #5 - Slot machines are the worst bet you can make in a casino - All I can say is glance over to the keno machines, there you will find the worst bet in the casino, we're talking 30% to 35% hold on most keno games.

Myth #6 - Pull the handle you'll win - Doesn't matter if you pull the handle, push the button, plunk in the coins, use your elbow, stand on your head or anything else. If when you push the button/pull the handle the RNG selects a winning combination you'll win, if not you will not win.

Myth #7 - Casino employees know when a machine is due - Give this one a little thought, don't you think if your scantly clad waitress knew a machine was about to hit a jackpot that she would tell you? No, she would have her boyfriend or husband or brother or mother playing it and you would see them hit the jackpot.

Myth #8 - Casinos can turn the machines on and off, that makes everyone win at once and then turn them off and get all the money back - Wrong, there is no master control room that controls the payouts on slots. There is a slot control room but it only monitors when there is a problem on the machine like a hopper fill condition, hand paid jackpot condition or an alarm (yes all the machines have alarms on them) when a machine needs attention the person working the control room radios down to a slot attendant and tells them which machine and the problem, now you know why they all wear radios. Besides being very illegal, don't you think they would leave them in the off position all the time, afterall they are there to make money. All slot machines have cycles, they have take cycles and pay cycles. This isn't saying that you won't win a coin in a take cycle, generally some of the best hits are in the take cycles. And this also isn't saying that you'll hit a jackpot in a pay cycle.

Myth #9 - I just got up from that machine and she/he hit the jackpot, if I only would have played it - Not unless you're so in sync with that other person that you pushed the button at the exact 1/1000'th of a second that they did. It's all random.

Myth #10 - I bought this system on the internet for $40 now I'm going to win or I bought this keychain for $399 off the internet and I can point it at this machine, press the button and I'll win - There are no systems that can guarantee that you'll win anything, in fact there is nothing guaranteed in a casino at all. Just because the guy next to you said he bought this system and the first machine he played hit a jackpot doesn't mean that it worked. It just means that he was at the right place at the right time. As far as the jackpotters type of devices, well all I can say is you'd feel funny if you found out you had spent $300, $400, or $500 for a plastic box, 9 volt battery and an LED, because that's about all you get. Slot machines are stringently tested at the manufacturer with radio frequency, shock stick, magnets, almost everything you can think of. You can not cheat a slot machine, period.

Myth #11 - If I don't play with my players club card this machine will hit - This has to be the number 1 mistake, it will cost you money. The card reader and RNG are in no way connected. When you put your players card in the infomation is sent to the players club computer and it records your wins and losses, that's all. It has no effect on the outcome of the game.

Myth #12 - Play on the ends of aisles and near where people stand in line, that's where the better paying machines are located - Another myth, if slot directors did that don't you think there would be people lined up to play these machines? Most slot floors now machines are grouped together by denomination, not payouts. This isn't saying that a 98% nickel machine can be sitting between 2 87% nickel machines, it can, I've seen it. You just have to pick your favorite game and play it.

There are hundreds and possibly thousands more myths and misconceptions about slot machines. Just remember, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
